Joe Wade was the second Scarlet Spider and the only one to operate as a villain while using the name. An undercover FBI agent assigned to investigate the second (Carolyn Trainer), Joe Wade is discovered and forced to undertake a virtual reality graft. Carolyn turns him into a hard-light holographic duplicate of the Ben Reilly Scarlet Spider, to ruin his name. In his Scarlet Spider guise, Joe is actually trapped in a virtual reality chamber, and his thoughts power the hologram. Despite this, Joe is unable to stop himself from committing acts of violence. When the real Scarlet Spider, Ben Reilly, attacks Doctor Octopus's lair, he damages the machine while Joe is still inside. The damage to the virtual reality chamber causes the grafts to malfunction, and Joe becomes a real mechanized Scarlet Spider with amazing powers. As the new Scarlet Spider, Joe is superhumanly strong and fast, and has claws on his fingertips; he can also fire webbing from his wrists, crawl up walls, and fire laser 'stingers' from his eyes. It takes both Ben Reilly (in the guise of Spider-Man) and the to stop the cybernetic Scarlet Spider, and the FBI put him in custody and have him undergo medical treatments to remove the technology.

Spiderman Morphsuits: Ben Reilly Scarlet Spider

  • Scarlet Spider and Spider-Carnage appear in a central role for Spider-Man: The Animated Series, both voiced by Christopher Daniel Barnes. In the series finale "Spider Wars", numerous versions of Spider-Man from different realities team up, including Ben Reilly as Scarlet Spider. As Scarlet Spider explains his origins to Spider-Man, he and Spider-Carnage (the series finale's main villain) were related—Scarlet Spider is Spider-Man's clone or vice versa; the Miles Warren in their reality had "robbed them of their pasts". Due to the confusion, the Peter Parker that became Ben Reilly dyed his hair yellow and took on the alias of Scarlet Spider. The Spider-Man of that world, already struggling with the idea that he might not be the real Peter Parker and infuriated by Scarlet Spider's existence, met up with the Scarlet Spider at the Kingpin's lair and tried to kill him. The Carnage symbiote emerged from an open inter-dimensional portal and bonded with Spider-Man, driving him completely insane and turning him into Spider-Carnage. Hearing this, Spider-Man remarks "This is starting to sound like a bad comic book plot!".[35][36] Spider-Carnage nearly destroyed the entire multiverse. However, Beyond and Madame Web were able to rewind time enough to gather Spider-Men worthy enough to stop the madman with Ben Reilly being amongst them. In the high-tech Spider-man's reality, Spider-Carnage meets that reality's Uncle Ben which causes him to gain clarity briefly, making him jump into a portal that destroys the Carnage symbiote and himself.
